The best alternative to tap water is in-home water filtration. With an in-home water filter you can have better than bottled water quality for under 10¢ a gallon. Fill a reusable water bottle from your filter and your are good to go!!
Filters – If you are thinking about getting a filter for your home, there are several things to consider. First, make sure you get a filter that removes the contaminants of concern in your tap water (see Local Drinking Water Information). Second, be sure the filter is independently certified by NSF (or a similar independent organization) to remove the contaminants of concern in your tap water (if any). Third, maintain the filter at least as often as the manufacturer recommends.
There are many options for in-home filtration systems. See Bottled Water Blues for some suggestions. And, you can pay for your in-home filter system with all the money you will save by reducing or eliminating your bottled water purchases!!
Reusable Water Bottles - Want to do something good for the environment and for your health? Instead of buying bottled water, which is a big waste of resources, try filling a reusable water bottle from your tap or filter. Here is a list of reusable water bottles:
Nalgene
Camelbak
Sigg

Where to buy? There are lots of places you can buy them. REI.com has a good selection. Or, better yet, check out your local sporting goods store and support a business in your community!

When evaluating different water filtration systems also consider the amount of water that the unit wastes during it's back flush cycle. Some reverse osmosis units and whole home water filters can waste more than 100 gallons per month.
Also check with your water district to determine if they treat the water with chlorine or chloramine. Not all filters can effectively remove the chloramine and this is what most districts (in the bay area) are using to treat the water.
